Urenco Nederland (Almelo)
Urenco’s site in the Netherlands is located in Almelo, a town in the East of the country. As with all Urenco’s sites the operational process utilises state-of-the art technology, based on the centrifuge method: the most clean and energy-efficient way to enrich uranium.
Stable Isotopes
At our site in Almelo, we also use the centrifuge to separate other isotopes then uranium. Our Stable Isotopes department separates various isotopes for medical and industrial applications.
History
The Almelo site was founded in 1970. The site now employs around 240 people. The largest plant on site, SP5, began operation in 2000 and produces over half the site’s enrichment capacity.
Achievements
During 2007 the Almelo site has successfully completed the installation and commissioning of cascades in Hall 4 of SP5. Construction of Hall 5 progressed well and first production is expected in the course of 2008. Construction of Hall 6 also commenced in 2007 and will continue during 2008.
Capacity stood at 3,600 tSW/a at 31 December 2007, an increase of almost 3% on the previous year.
