Richie Enrichment Fact
Hi, I'm Richie
Uranium enriched by Urenco ends with the generation of electricity for consumers around the world.

Building and Operating the National Enrichment Facility

LES has made significant progress in its goal to construct the National Enrichment Facility and become the first US centrifuge uranium enrichment plant. Robust project, operational, and corporate teams have been established to monitor construction activities, and ensure training and procedural development is on schedule to support the first production date in 2009. Major construction activities commenced in early 2007 and continued to accelerate throughout the year. All of the five core buildings are now under construction and approximately 800 construction workers are on site.

History

On 23 June 2006, LES made history when the Nuclear Regulatory Commission, for the first time, issued a licence to construct and operate a gas centrifuge uranium enrichment plant to be known as the National Enrichment Facility, located in Eunice, LEA County, New Mexico.

Eunice was selected as the site for Urenco’s fourth enrichment plant, the National Enrichment Facility, both for its geological landscape and more notably its history as a hub of scientific research and development. The site received the first combined Construction and Operating licence ever issued in the United States from the Nuclear Regulatory Commission in June 2006. LES, a wholly owned subsidiary of Urenco, is licensed to build and operate the National Enrichment Facility.

It is anticipated that at full capacity the plant will produce sufficient enriched uranium for nuclear fuel to provide approximately 5% of America’s electricity needs.
